Why is it SO HARD to Make Friends? The Case of Chinese College Students in the U.S.
Back when I was a fresh-off-the-boat undergrad, I wondered why it was so hard to make friends with people who was NOT Chinese. Is it just me? To answer my own question, I conducted a series of interviews that takes a deeper look into the experiences of being a Chinese international student in the U.S. and why it can be hard to make friends with locals sometimes.
The Story Behind the A’s: What are They Thinking?!
Something I came to be aware of since arriving in the U.S. is the list of stereotypes that portrays students of East Asian heritage as “smart”, “hard-working”, “nerds”, “robots”, “works only to please their parents”, yadi-yadi-ya. Are those true? To answer my own question, I conducted series of interviews where I investigate the perspectives and motivation of high-achieving Chinese students.
